Communication vs Connection
Finding Common Ground
Effective communication is about finding common ground with another person.
Finding common ground is the key to connecting with another person.
To find common ground ask questions with an eye to find common interests and experiences.
There are 3 questions I’ve used to learn about what’s important to another person in order to identify their values and determine what's important to them:
What do you dream about ?
What do you sing about ?
What do you cry about?
People’s answers to these gives me great insight into someone’s heart. It allows me to find common ground with them and connect with that person.
When you find common ground, share experiences, emotions, and lessons learned from those experiences, and if possible do something together that you both enjoy.
Common ground is the place where people can Discover differences, share ideas, discover solutions, and create something together.
Effective Communication is not just a process of transmitting massive amounts of information from one person to another.
Effective Communication is a journey where 2 people walk together over time.
The more that people have in common, the better chance that people can take that journey together.
So the goal is don’t just communicate, but connect. Everyone communicates, but few actually connect.
If you want to be a Connector, then connect with another person at common ground.
When 2 people get together to communicate, each person has a reason for doing so. It’s important to know What your reason is and even more important to know what is their reason. Then Build a discussion bridge between your 2 reasons to walk on a journey together. Now you’re connected.
The bottom line is to know how to make the journey a Win-Win for both parties.
